Day 12: Missoula

A wonderful day off with family in Missoula.

Dame and Darcy's house in the Missions

Uncle Damel

We stayed in the yurt - so nice, like African safari nice!

Coffee and treats at Le Petite OutrĂ©

Biking to get cocktails at a new micro distillery

After cocktails!

Day 11: Hiking in Glacier National Park

We decided not to try and tackle biking in Glacier on a Sunday in July, which turned out to be a good idea.  Uncle Dame was a trooper and drove us up to the pass for a great hike.  I have to say it was fun to not be biking for a change...

Sasha's house

Damian and Darcy's friend Sasha hosted us outside of Whitefish on his beautiful spread

Damian Demonstrates Riding Technique

Day 10 Stats

Date: 27 July

Mileage: 48

Weather: normal hot: still in the 90s

Day 10: Eureka to White Fish

Today was a cruiser of a day, our last full day biking.  We stopped in Olney for a snack and spent some time sitting on the hot dusty pouch of the only store/gas station in the village.  After that we found a great swimming hole behind the Stillwater Bar & Grill on the lower Stillwater Lake.  The part of the day on 93 was pretty scary, big trucks, angry tourists in a big hurry and no shoulder at all.  But we ended the ride on Farm to Market Rd which was beautiful: great riding and no traffic.

Breakfast at Cafe Jax in Eureka - a great place to fuel up for the day.  We met several other touring bikers on various routes.

Saltines and milk (plus power drink) snack at Olney Store

Lower Stillwater

Day 9 Stats

Date: 26 July

Mileage: 92

Weather: so unbelievably hot on those climbs (high 90s - 100)

Day 9: Libby to Eureka.

Well, we missed a turn today and did an extra 20 miles.  But we're in at last.

So tired.

This is Hana typing...first entry.  We met this nice couple at a lunch stop yesterday.  They live in Libby and invited us to stay at their place.  They are cyclists themselves.  We camped in their backyard and they fed us delicious blueberry-huckleberry cobbler and some of their homemade wine.  So nice!

So, we had a little snafu today.  We (Gabe) misread the map and we didn't figure it out until about 10 miles up the wrong road.  Grrrr.  Not happy campers to add another 20 miles.  When we finally got back on track, we faced a grueling day of climbs, more climbs, and...hot climbs.  We were following the edge of Lake Koocanusa for 45 miles.

It was pretty, but so hot again (about 100 degrees) and we couldn't get enough water!

Gotta stretch those sore legs.

We made it.  Had some yummy teriyaki in Eureka and an ice cream cone.  We can hear the local rodeo across the field going strong.  Finally, a cool breeze.  Good night!

Day 8 Stats

Date: 25 July

Mileage: 98

Flat tires: 1

States: 2 (Idaho and Montana)

Travel time: 12 hours (including breaks)

Weather: still too hot, we are officially dried out from a PNW winter.

Day 8: part 2

We started off today with a last stop for "good" coffee for a few days at our new favorite spot in Sand Point

Then we rode along Lake Pend Orielle for a couple of hours.  The views were spectacular but the roads were dicey: think Chuckanut Drive with lots of huge trucks driving 60mph

Then we followed 200 into Montana. Hot, busy, no shoulders, bad drivers with huge trucks.

We finally turned onto 56 for some great riding through the mountains, but it was about 1:30 and we had 50 miles still to go

Stopped at Bull Lake for a quick swim

The mountain gods sent us a strong tailwind for the last 14 miles into Libby!
